Alabama DA drops charges against woman indicted for manslaughter after miscarrying when shot

An Alabama district attorney reportedly announced Wednesday they were dropping charges against a woman indicted for manslaughter after she was shot in the stomach and her unborn child died.

Marshae Jones was charged with manslaughter earlier this month after a grand jury said she initiated the confrontation that led to her baby dying, according to AL.com.

{mosads}Jones was arrested earlier this month stemming from the shooting that occurred in December where authorities say she started a fight that led Ebony Jemison to shoot Jones in what was considered an act of self-defense.

Bessemer Cutoff District Attorney Lynneice Washington said at a press conference Wednesday that there will be no legal action against Jones.

“There are no winners, only losers, in this sad ordeal,” Washington said.

Jones was five months pregnant when the shooting took place. She was arrested June 26 following the grand jury indictment issued in April.

The indictment was unsealed the day after Jones was arrested and sparked a media firestorm in response.

The indictment said Jones “intentionally caused the death of …. unborn baby Jones by initiating a fight knowing she was five months pregnant,” according to the news outlet.

After the grand jury chose to indict Jones and not Jemison, charges against the latter were dropped.

Attorneys for Jones said they were pleased with Washington’s decision Wednesday and it would allow her to rebuild her life.

“This is the outcome we sought this week in our motion to dismiss,” the statement reads. “We are gratified the District Attorney evaluated the matter and chose not to proceed with a case that was neither reasonable nor just.”
