Minneapolis mayor proclaims ‘Love Trumps Hate Day’ ahead of Trump visit

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) proclaimed Thursday as “Love Trumps Hate Day” in the city just hours before President Trump is scheduled to hold a campaign rally there.

In a statement pointing to the city’s diverse population as a strength, Frey claimed that his city “will not be baited by voices that promote conflict and intolerance,” apparently referring to Trump’s rhetoric aimed at undocumented immigrants.

{mosads}”Minneapolis will put on full display tonight the love and compassion for our neighbors that has made our city world-class,” Frey’s office added in the proclamation.

Frey’s proclamation comes ahead of the president’s planned campaign rally tonight at the Target Center in a state he narrowly lost to Hillary Clinton in 2016. The president and Frey have battled for days, with Trump accusing the mayor of attempting to stifle free speech by billing the Trump campaign more than a half-million dollars for expenses related to the rally.

“Someone please tell the Radical Left Mayor of Minneapolis that he can’t price out Free Speech. Probably illegal!” Trump tweeted Tuesday.

“Someone tell the President of the United States that he can afford to help pay for the extra time our officers will be putting in while he’s in town,” the mayor responded in his own tweet.

Trump’s rally Thursday will likely escalate his feud with the Democratic mayor, as well as Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), a frequent critic of the president who represents the district.
