Officer, armed student injured in incident at Wisconsin high school

A student at a high school in Wisconsin was injured on Tuesday after pulling a gun on a school resource officer, who then fired at the student with their service weapon.

WBAY.com reported that both the officer and the student were taken to a hospital with injuries, though the extent and severity were not immediately clear. It also wasn’t clear if the student had fired at the officer or if the officer’s injury was sustained by other means.

“There has been an officer-involved shooting at Oshkosh West High School. The school has been locked down. Students are being evacuated and transported to Perry Tipler Middle School. Parents may reunite with their students at Tipler; identification is required. A student armed with a weapon confronted a school resource officer. The student and officer were both injured and transported to local hospitals,” Oshkosh Area School District told the news station in a statement.

“Only one student was injured. This incident is being turned over to the State Department of Criminal Investigation. There will be further information shared when it becomes available,” the statement went on.

It was initially unclear initially what kind of firearm the student had before being shot by the officer.

The shooting comes a day after a school resource officer in a different Wisconsin high school shot a male student who refused to put down a gun he had brought to school.

“The suspect would not remove his hands from his pocket and continued to ignore officers’ commands,” the Waukesha police department said of the Monday shooting. “The suspect removed the handgun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers. An officer was forced to discharge his firearm striking the suspect.”
