Multiple states see deadliest day since beginning of coronavirus outbreak

Several states and Washington, D.C., reported their deadliest days from the COVID-19 pandemic on Tuesday.

New Jersey, the state with the second highest number of cases behind New York, had the worst day out of the group, reporting 365 new deaths and over 4,000 new cases of the virus.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) said the uptick in deaths and cases could be because of the pause in reporting cases over Easter weekend, reiterating that social distancing is still paramount.

“Let’s only go through this once,” Murphy said, nj.com reports. “We have to keep our foot on the gas. We have to stay at home.”

New Jersey has over 64,500 cases of COVID-19.

Louisiana reported 129 deaths on Tuesday, shattering its previous high of 70. The state reported 502 new cases.

D.C. reported 15 deaths and Maryland noted 40 new fatalities, according to data compiled by The Washington Post. Overall, in the DMV region at least 526 people have died from the disease, with over 17,700 confirmed cases.
