South Dakota governor says she’s working with Trump officials on Mount Rushmore flyover

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) is working with the Trump administration on plans for a military flyover at Mount Rushmore during the president’s visit to the national landmark July 3.

“We do anticipate there being a military flyover of some kind,” said Ian Fury, communications director for Noem, Politico reported Wednesday.

Fury added that the state government is communicating with “numerous federal agencies on planning this event.”

Officials at the Pentagon have started discussions about the flyover, but haven’t moved into the planning stage yet, a defense official told Politico.

“At this point it’s just direction from the [White House] on what they want to do,” the official said.

Trump said last month that he would attend the first fireworks display at the monument in 11 years after lifting environmental restrictions preventing such displays.

Fireworks displays had been banned for more than a decade, but a recent environmental assessment from the Interior Department determined there would be “no significant impact” for the show to proceed next month.

The flyover at Mount Rushmore will come a day before Independence Day celebrations throughout the nation.

On July 4, the “Salute to America” festivities will take place on the National Mall. The event is will reportedly include military aircraft, music performances and fireworks displays.
