Trump supporters that plan to gather at Selena statue threatened with legal action
The family of slain Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla is threatening to sue a man who put a Trump hat on her statue in Corpus Christi, Texas.
A letter obtained by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times from the singer’s estate representation says that Joe Michael Perez planned a pro-Trump gathering at the statue that is “infringing,” using Selena’s statue and image for commercial exploitation.
Perez announced on July 1 on Facebook that he would be organizing a Trump gathering at the statue. He used the tagline “Bidi, Bidi, Trump, Trump” to promote the event, which is scheduled to take place on July 11.
The attorneys representing the singer’s family reportedly said the move “unlawfully engages in marketing, promotion, and exploitation” of her merchandise.
The letter says the singer’s brand has not “at any time” been associated with partisan politics. Selena’s family is known for launching numerous lawsuits against those seeking to profit from her brand, including against her widower.
“Without obtaining Quintanilla’s permission, you have unilaterally associated Selena’s brand and identity with Donald J. Trump, whose public statements, ideology, and political re-election campaign are neither endorsed by nor affiliated with Quintanilla in any manner,” the letter states, according to the Caller-Times.
Perez told the Caller-Times he denies the allegations, saying “the Selena statue is a symbol of the Hispanic community.”
“I wanted to deliver a message that minorities who support Trump are not alone,” Perez said.
Despite requests from attorneys, Perez said he will move forward with the event Saturday, where he plans to launch his candidacy for mayor of Corpus Christi.
