Arizona reports more than 4,000 new coronavirus cases, ICUs 89 percent full

The Arizona Department of Health Services reported 4,221 new coronavirus cases on Friday and 44 more deaths.

The highest number of new cases the state has ever reported was 5,272 on June 29. As of Friday, 116,892 people in Arizona have tested positive for the virus and 2,082 people have died.

State health officials also reported Friday that 89 percent of intensive care units in the state are full and the state’s positivity rate now stands at 22.2 percent.

Arizona is one of several states currently experiencing an outbreak of the virus, after previously moving ahead with plans to reopen state economies following initial shutdowns due to the pandemic.

On Thursday, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) announced he is issuing an executive order limiting indoor dining capacity to 50 percent capacity to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. 

Last month the governor said he would allow local governments to mandate that people wear face masks in public, and though many major areas in the state already have, he has not issued a statewide face covering requirement.

President Trump held indoor campaign events in Tulsa, Okla., and Phoenix last month despite the advice of public health officials. Several members of the president’s campaign staff have since tested positive for COVID-19.
