McSally’s final floor speech: ‘I gave it my all, and I left it all on the field’

Sen. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.) gave her final floor speech after losing her race for a complete term, saying, “I gave it my all, and I left it all on the field.”

McSally was unseated from her Senate position after retired U.S. Navy captain and former astronaut Mark Kelly (D) defeated her in the general election earlier this month.

“As it has been for most chapters of my life, I didn’t come here in the traditional or easy way. … I gave it my all, and I left it all on the field,” McSally said Wednesday during her speech on the Senate floor.

She thanked Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) for “the blessing” to serve the state, underscoring the “unprecedented challenges” the COVID-19 pandemic has brought this year.

Throughout her campaign, McSally was projected to be one of the most vulnerable Republican senators in the general election this year, as her opponent Kelly outfundraised her campaign by $17 million.

Coupled with polls projecting a competitive race in Arizona, McSally could not hold on to her seat to complete a full term, one two which she was appointed by Ducey in December 2018.

“Accepting the governor’s appointment to be a member of the world’s most prestigious and powerful governing body was like most missions in my life: a high-risk, high-purpose endeavor,” she said.

McSally announced her concession from the Senate race last week and congratulated Kelly on his win, offering her support in his transition “to ensure Arizonans are best served during this time.”
