Michigan tightens security in state capital ahead of Biden inauguration

Michigan’s state capital is adding extra security measures around the city to prepare for potential violence in the upcoming days before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor (D) explained the new measures on CNN this week.

“We’re hoping for the best. We’re hoping for a peaceful protest. We believe in First Amendment rights, but we’re preparing for the worst,” Schor said.

Precautionary measures are already being taken around the state Capitol, with fencing surrounding it. Additionally, lawmakers will not be allowed inside the building Monday through Thursday. 

The FBI has warned that there could be armed protests at every state Capitol ahead of the inauguration. The Michigan National Guard is being sent to Lansing as an extra precaution.

Fencing will also be erected around city hall and the police station, Schor said. Citizens in Lansing are being told not to engage with any protesters, and businesses are boarding up.

“We are a pro-Second Amendment state. We have this every year, these armed groups. … This year’s a little different because we are concerned about what happened in D.C.,” said Schor.

The Michigan state Capitol saw protests happen outside on Jan. 6, when the U.S. Capitol riot occurred. The next morning, the state Capitol had to be evacuated due to a bomb threat. 

States around the country are preparing for potential violence as the inauguration approaches. D.C. is already closing off roads and metro stations, with more security measures to take effect next week.
