New Jersey state senator charged with DWI after allegedly hitting three parked cars

A New Jersey state senator was arrested on a driving while intoxicated charge after she allegedly hit three parked cars on Thursday morning, though she says the crash was caused by her medication.

Sources from the Jersey City Police Department told Real Garden State that state Sen. Sandra Cunningham (D), who was not injured in the incident, claimed she was not intoxicated when she hit the vehicles.

Former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey (D), who picked Cunningham up from the scene, believes she had a bad reaction to her medication and was not drunk, NBC New York reported. McGreevey says he has seen the senator have a bad reaction to her medication before. 

A warrant was signed by a judge for authorities to test Cunningham’s bodily fluid, Real Garden State reported. 

There were no injuries reported from the scene, but it is unclear if anyone was in the parked cars at the time.

Sources told Real Garden State that Jersey City police Capt. Joseph Olszewski tried to get Cunningham out of the charge, telling supervisor on the scene to drop the investigation. 

The supervisor did not comply and an investigation is underway.
