6 in van killed in Georgia interstate crash

Six people died and several were injured in a crash involving a passenger van in Georgia, The Associated Press reported.

Police said the local fire department received calls that a vehicle was engulfed in flames on Georgia’s I-85 northbound at the split to I-985.

Six people were pronounced dead at the scene with several others injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. One person declined to be transported after suffering a minor injury. Police said they believed all passengers were adults.

Passersby attempted to pull victims from the burning vehicle and render aid, according to police. 

Gwinnett police told 11Alive  Sunday that there were 16 people in that passenger van during the crash.  

Gwinnett police said in a statement that investigators are still trying to determine what happened in that crash and details about the occupants will be released in the next few days.
