3 killed in separate Minneapolis shootings
Three people were killed in separate shootings in Minneapolis this weekend, The Associated Press reported on Sunday.
Minneapolis Police Department spokesperson John Elder said that officers responded to the three incidents on Saturday morning.
In the first incident, a woman died at a nearby hospital after being shot on the 2200 block of N. 2nd Street in Minneapolis. Elder said the deceased woman wasn’t an intended target in that shooting.
Eleven minutes later, authorities responded to a call of a male victim wounded under a bridge in the East Lake Street area. Elder said in the AP report that witnesses told police the victim was viewing a drag street race when a shootout occurred. Officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but the victim died at a nearby hospital from his injuries, according to the AP.
In the last incident, Metro Transit police arrived at a scene where a suspect shot a male victim just after 2:00 a.m. The suspect reportedly tried to flee the scene and an officer shot him in the leg.
The shooting victim died at an area hospital and the suspect was treated for his injuries before being taken into custody, police reportedly said.
The shootings come days after members of a U.S. Marshals Service task force shot and killed 32-year-old Winston Boogie Smith Jr. while attempting to arrest him in Minneapolis.
Protests in the city have erupted in wake of Smith’s death on Thursday, the AP noted, but officials said this weekend’s shootings were not related.
