Two officers shot in Baltimore trying to apprehend homicide suspect
Two officers from the U.S. Marshall Service were shot in Baltimore while trying to apprehend a homicide suspect on Tuesday.
Police say Justin Powell was shot and killed after he fired a gun at two officers who pulled him over after suspecting the vehicle was connected with a homicide suspect, The Baltimore Sun reported.
The officers, who were involved in the federal Warrant Apprehension Task Force, endured non-life threatening injuries from the encounter.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said during a press conference Powell shot at the two officers as they approached the vehicle with other officers returning fire.
Powell had multiple charges in several different jurisdictions and a warrant for his arrest in Baltimore for homicide and possessing a handgun. Powell was declared dead at the hospital after the incident.
“Our officers and our marshals were doing exactly what the people of Baltimore want us doing,” Harrison said. “That is, pursuing violent offenders.”
It is unclear if there is body camera footage of the shooting since U.S. Marshal Service officers typically do not wear them, a police spokesperson said, according to the Sun.
