Two killed in shooting outside Illinois courthouse

Two people were killed and one injured in a shooting that took place outside an Illinois courthouse Thursday morning.

Kankakee Mayor Christopher Curtis told The Associated Press that suspects in the shooting have been taken into custody. His office added that the area has been secured and there is no longer a threat to public.

“There has been a shooting at the Kankakee County Courthouse. The scene is secured. More information will be available as it becomes available. We are asking everyone to avoid the area as the investigation continues,” the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office said on its Facebook page.

About one hour later, the sheriff’s office said the courthouse will remain closed for the rest of the day.

Kankakee has a population of roughly 26,000 people and is located about 60 miles south of Chicago.

As WLS-TV reports, Kankakee County Sheriff Mike Downey said the shooting is believed to be a “targeted incident.” The shooting took place south of the Kankakee County Courthouse, near the jail.

No officers were injured and the police did not fire any shots, according to WLS-TV.
