Grandson of Cleveland mayor slain in shooting

Police are searching for the suspect in the deadly shooting of Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson’s (D) grandson, The Associated Press reported.

The city police department shared that officers responded to a call Sunday night about a shooting on Sidaway and E. 70th St.

Authorities then found the body of Frank Q. Jackson near a housing project, according to the AP.

Mayor Jackson visited the shooting scene, the AP noted.

In a statement to Fox affiliate WJW, the Cleveland City Council expressed their condolences to Mayor Jackson.

“We offer our deepest sympathies to Mayor Frank G. Jackson and his family for the death of his 24-year-old grandson Frank Q. Jackson last night. Cleveland Police are investigating, and we believe the person or persons responsible will be apprehended and brought to justice,” the city council said.

Cleveland saw a 59 percent increase in its murder rate in the first three months of 2021. There were 177 homicides in all of 2020, the highest since 1991.

Jackson, 24, was awaiting a court appearance stemming from a felonious assault charge in January over allegations that he dragged a police officer while attempting to flee his vehicle.

He was also sentenced to 18 months probation in 2019 after pleading guilty to misdemeanor assault stemming from an altercation with his then-girlfriend, the AP reported.
