Search for Brian Laundrie scaled back

Law enforcement is reportedly scaling back its search for Brian Laundrie just days after the body of Gabby Petito, his fiancée, was found in Wyoming.

Initially, more than 75 law enforcement personnel were searching for him in the 24,000-acre Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County, Fla., using search dogs and drones, USA Today reported. But local police announced Monday that they will reduce the number of law enforcement on the ground and that the FBI will take over.

“I don’t think you’re going to see those large-scale types of efforts this week,” North Port Police Department spokesperson Josh Taylor told reporters on Monday, adding that the geography of the area may be affecting the search. “Hopefully, water will lower in areas hard to currently access.”

Petito’s family reported her missing on Sept. 11. The 22-year-old had been traveling with Laundrie across the U.S., documenting their trip extensively on social media as they lived out of a van and explored national parks and attractions.

Her body was found in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

Suspicions over Laundrie’s involvement in her death were fueled when it was revealed that he had returned to Florida without her and refused to cooperate in the investigation of her disappearance.

Investigators labeled him a “person of interest” in the case, and the FBI issued an arrest warrant for Laundrie.

On Sunday, celebrity personality Duane Chapman, also known as Dog the Bounty Hunter, volunteered to join the hunt for Laundrie.
