Burger King testing Impossible nuggets
Burger King is testing Impossible Foods’ meatless nuggets in several markets, becoming the first fast-food chain to offer this alternative, CNBC reported.
Starting on Monday, Burger King restaurants in Boston, Miami and Des Moines, Iowa, will be the first to offer plant-based nuggets.
The restaurant noted that the nuggets will be cooked on oil used for meat and cheese products, which could not be suitable for strict vegan eaters, according to CNN.
Burger King partnered with Impossible Foods in 2019 in the creation of the “Impossible Whopper,” being the first fast-food chain to sell the meatless burger, according to CNBC.
Burger King competitors have also partnered with planted-based companies in an attempt to sell plant-based products.
McDonald’s partnered with Impossible Foods’ rival Beyond Meat, but hasn’t released plant-based items in the U.S., CNBC reported.
Impossible Foods began rolling out its planted-based nuggets in various grocery stores and restaurants during the summer, while Beyond Meat’s own plant-based tenders hit restaurants in July.
Burger King’s new initiative comes as traditional chicken meat has become more expensive and harder to find.
According to data from the Bank of America Securities, chicken prices have doubled in 2021.
The fast-food chain also announced the creation of the Ghost Pepper Chicken Nuggets, nuggets that are made with real white chicken.
The product will be rolled out starting Monday, CNN noted.
