Child dies in Alabama flooding

A child died from flooding in Alabama on Thursday as the state saw a high volume of rain overnight.

The Marshall County coroner’s office tweeted a child in Arab, Ala., died in flooding.

Around six inches of rain hit the state, with cars getting submerged in parts of Birmingham, The Associated Press reported

Escambia Sheriff Heath Jackson said there was 3 feet of water in a grocery store and school classes had to be canceled Thursday.

The rain came from a low-pressure system that sat above Alabama and parts of Florida, according to the AP.

The rain should stop later on Thursday as officials work to assess the damage and remove the water.

Officials said in Baldwin County there were 250,000 gallons of wastewater that overflowed due to the rain that hit the state.

Across the state, there were 3 to 6 inches of rain with 3 more inches still possible, the AP noted.

There were no major power outages from the flooding, poweroutage.us shows.
