A Boston Roman Catholic high school has suspended football activities amid an investigation into reports of one of its players using racial slurs toward an opposing player during a game last weekend, The Associated Press reported.

According to a statement posted on St. John Paul II School website, Cathedral High School players told their coaches about St. John Paul II players using racial epithets toward them during the contest.

Cathedral coaches reported the incident to St. John Paul administrators who have opened an investigation into the allegations, according to the statement.

“Effective immediately, on-field football activities have been suspended in order to support a thorough investigation,” Cathedral High School said in the statement. “Appropriate steps, including any disciplinary actions, will be taken based on the findings.”

In a letter to the school’s community, St. John Paul II President Christopher Keavy shared his dismay over the allegations.

“These allegations leave us dismayed. Guests should know that St. John Paul II School values them and their essential human dignity,” St. John Paul II President Christopher Keavy said in a letter to his school’s community. “Furthermore, Cathedral High School has been a friendly opponent of ours many times in a spirit of mutual respect.”

In a statement, Cathedral High President Dan Carmody said the school is cooperating with St. John Paul II officials on the investigation, according to the AP.

“We will continue to work together with the Saint John Paul II leadership team and trust there will be accountability and an opportunity for restoration and growth,” Carmody said.
