3 people killed in Amtrak collision in South Carolina

An Amtrak train collided with a vehicle in South Carolina just before 2:30 a.m. Saturday, killing three and injuring one, NBC News reported.

A car was located “off the roadway with heavy damage” near a stopped Amtrak train by police and firefighters, according to according to a North Charleston Fire Department press release obtained by NBC. 

Emergency responders pronounced three of the victims dead at the scene, while the fourth was treated by firefighters and taken to the hospital, the fire department said, according to NBC. Officials said that none of the 500 passengers on the train were injured.

The cause of the collision is currently unknown, NBC noted.

The news follows an Amtrak crash in Montana in September that left three people dead and dozens injured.
