Michigan hits new record for COVID-19 hospitalizations

Michigan hit a new record for adult COVID-19 hospitalizations on Monday amid surging infections in the Wolverine State. 

The state reported 4,181 adult COVID-19 hospitalizations, with more than 80 percent of hospital inpatient beds and 84 percent of intensive care beds filled, according to state COVID-19 data, the Hastings Tribune reported.

The previous record for adult hospitalizations in Michigan during the pandemic was on April 19 with 4,158 adults hospitalized. 

Twenty-two hospitals have more than 90 percent of their beds full with nine hospitals at maximum capacity, state data shows. 

Forty-eight children have been hospitalized with COVID-19. In addition, more than 300 children and adults are in the hospital for potential coronavirus cases, although those cases are not confirmed. 

Most coronavirus hospitalizations and deaths have been among the unvaccinated in Michigan, according to the local outlet. 

From Oct. 14 to Nov. 12, 75 percent of deaths and 71 percent of hospitalizations were among those who were not fully vaccinated from the virus. 

The new record comes after 44 military personnel were sent to Michigan to help with the spike in coronavirus cases. 

“I’m grateful that the federal government has granted our request to provide much needed relief to the health care personnel who have remained on the frontlines of this pandemic,” Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said in a statement. 

“Right now, our doctors and nurses are reporting the vast majority of their patients are unvaccinated or have not yet received a booster dose. We can all do our part to help reduce the strain on our hospital systems by getting vaccinated, making an appointment to get a booster dose, and continuing to take precautions to keep ourselves and loved ones safe,” she added.
