Baltimore mayor: Rioters will face justice
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake (D) on Sunday vowed that anyone who had committed crimes during recent riots in her city would suffer the consequences of their actions.
{mosads}“I’m going to make sure they are brought to justice,” Rawlings-Blake said of violent demonstrators who damaged the city Monday evening.
“I don’t condone it, and I will make sure those individuals are held accountable,” she told host Chuck Todd on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Furious protests boiled over Monday following the funeral of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who died on April 19 while in police custody.
Rawlings-Blake on Sunday promised she would restore civil order to the city and then repair divides between its law enforcement and minority communities.
“As a leader, my focus is to get us through this crisis,” she said.
“I know how to guide our city through tough times,” the mayor argued.
“Everyone wants to have that sense of calm and peace back in our city,” she added.
Rawlings-Blake expressed particular outrage for the burning of a CVS store during the chaos. That act, she said, badly hurt the area’s residents.
“People in our community are hurting over these actions,” Rawlings-Blake said. “Now we are working to repair the damage that was done.”
Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby on Friday charged six officers with criminal actions for their role in Gray’s death.
The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police has questioned the speed of her decision. It vowed on Friday that the legal system would vindicate the officers of any wrongdoing.
