Schiff: ‘I don’t expect we’re going to see any evidence’ of Trump’s wiretap claims

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said in an interview Sunday that he doesn’t think there will be any evidence to back up President Trump’s wiretapping claims.

“I don’t expect we’re going to see any evidence of this either,” Schiff, the ranking member of the House Select Committee on Intelligence, said on ABC’s “This Week.”

“There are one of two possibilities here. Either the president quite deliberately for some reason made up this charge or, perhaps more disturbing, the president really believes this,” he continued. 

“And here’s where I think it’s consequential … if six months from now the president should say that Iran is cheating on the nuclear agreement, if he’s making that up, it’s a real problem. If he’s not making it up and it’s true, it’s an even bigger problem because the question is, would people believe him.”

{mosads}Schiff questioned whether the American people and people around the world would believe the president if he made such a claim.

“And that has real-world consequences,” he said. 

Earlier this month, Trump claimed former President Obama had ordered the wiretapping of Trump Tower. In a series of early morning tweets, the president questioned how “low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process.”

FBI Director James Comey reportedly asked the Justice Department to publicly reject the president’s claims.
