Sunday shows preview: Trump faces aftermath of Harvey
President Trump’s handling in recent days of his first natural disaster as commander-in-chief will be in the spotlight Sunday as the morning shows focus on the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
Trump returned to Texas on Saturday for his second trip in less than a week after intense flooding rocked southeastern parts of the state and portions of Louisiana, displacing thousands and claiming the lives of at least 47 people.
The president and first lady Melania Trump met with volunteers and were photographed handing out food to people and playing with children at a shelter.
“We saw a lot of happiness,” the president told reporters after visiting Houston’s NRG Center.

“It’s been really nice. It’s been a wonderful thing,” he said. “As tough as this was, it’s been a wonderful thing, I think even for the country to watch it and for the world to watch it. It’s been beautiful.”
The trip came after an initial visit to Corpus Christie on Tuesday that critics argued lacked personal interaction with storm victims.
The White House has since sent a request to Congress for an initial $7.85 billion in emergency relief funding following the storm, which congressional leaders have vowed to quickly approve when lawmakers return to Washington on Tuesday from the monthlong August recess.
On Sunday, the federal response to the storm will be in the spotlight as Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Brock Long appears on CBS’s “Face the Nation” and ABC’s “This Week.”
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), who has touted close communication with Trump in recent days, is also slated to appear on CNN’s “State of the Union” and “Fox News Sunday,” while Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner (D) will be on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Here’s the lineup:
NBC’s “Meet the Press”: Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner (D) will discuss the current conditions in his city, as well as recovery efforts. Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) will also appear on the program.
CBS’s “Face the Nation”: Turner and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Brock Long will discuss Harvey recovery efforts and the storm’s aftermath on the program.
CNN’s “State of the Union”: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) will appear on the program to discuss recovery efforts in his state. Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) will also make appearances.
“Fox News Sunday”: Abbott and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin will make appearances on the program.
ABC’s “This Week”: FEMA’s administrator will be on the show, along with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas).
