Sunday shows preview: Florida threatened by Hurricane Irma

Hurricane Irma will become the second major hurricane to make landfall in the continental U.S. in two weeks when it tears into Florida early Sunday morning.

The damage from the storm has yet to be seen, but federal, state and local officials are already warning of catastrophe and planning a response to the potentially devastating aftermath of the Category 3 storm.

Just this week, Congress passed a stopgap government funding measure that included more than $15 billion in hurricane and emergency relief funding – an aid package prompted by Hurricane Harvey, which struck southeast Texas and Louisiana late last month.

Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) and Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), who represents part of the Houston area, are set to appear on CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, where they’re all but certain to discuss the crises facing their states.

Already, President Trump has approved emergency declarations related to Hurricane Irma for Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Such declarations authorize the Homeland Security Department and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate disaster relief efforts in those states.

Brock Long, the administrator of FEMA, is expected to be on “Fox News Sunday” to discuss the federal government’s emergency response to Irma and Harvey. Likewise, Florida Gov. Rick Scott will go on the show to talk about the threat to his state.

Here’s the full lineup:

ABC’s “This Week”: To be announced.

NBC’s “Meet the Press”: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who’s expected to unveil a single-payer health care proposal on Wednesday, will be on the show.

CBS’s “Face the Nation”: Nelson and McCaul will appear on the program, as Hurricane Irma bears down on Florida.

“Fox News Sunday”: Scott and Long are scheduled to go on the show. He’ll be joined by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus.

CNN’s “State of the Union”: Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is set to make an appearance.
