Senate Democrat: My job is not to fight the president

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) said during an interview on Sunday that while she may not always agree with President Trump, it’s not her job to fight him.

“There are specific policy things we agree on, and I am anxious to work with him on those things,” McCaskill told NBC’s Chuck Todd on “Meet The Press.”

“We may not agree always on style, and sometimes we don’t agree on substance, but my job’s not to fight him, my job is to fight for Missourians,” she continued.

{mosads}“So I get up every day, my feet hit the ground trying to figure out how I can get stuff done for them, not how I can criticize the president.”

McCaskill pointed to issues such as infrastructure and affordable prescription drugs as issues with which she’s found common ground with Trump.

Last week, retiring Republican Sens. Jeff Flake (Ariz.) and Sen. Bob Corker (Tenn.) spoke out against Trump, calling his behavior reckless and saying he is debasing the nation. Fellow Republicans largely downplayed the remarks.
