Dem senator: Kavanaugh’s credibility is ‘already very questionable’

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) on Sunday called Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s trustworthiness into question, saying that his career as a judge undercuts the credibility of his denial of sexual misconduct allegations made against him. 

“I put his denial in the context of everything that I know about him in terms of how he approaches his cases. His credibility is already very questionable in my mind and in the minds of a lot of my fellow Judiciary Committee members,” Hirono said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

{mosads}Kavanaugh has been accused by Christine Blasey Ford of sexual misconduct while the two were in high school. Ford has said that Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed, tried to remove her clothes and covered her mouth when she protested. 

Kavanaugh has denied the allegation.

Hirono said Sunday that there are cases that Kavanaugh has ruled on that “exemplify his … inability to be fair.”

“This is a person who is going to be sitting on our Supreme Court making decisions that will impact women’s reproductive choice. He very much is against women’s reproductive choice,” Hirono said.

“There are so many indications of his own lack of credibility,” she added.

Hirono was then asked by “State of the Union” host Jake Tapper if that means she thinks Kavanaugh is lying about the alleged incident between him and Ford.

“I believe her, let’s put it that way,” Hirono said. “There’s credibility to her story. … There’s nothing for her to gain by even coming forward with this.”
