Arkansas governor: ‘It would be very difficult’ for candidate to challenge Trump in primary

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) said Sunday that it “would be very difficult” for someone to mount a successful primary challenge to President Trump in 2020.

“Obviously, in our system of democracy, and our party, anybody’s free to make the challenge. Sometimes it’s a more difficult environment than others,” Hutchinson said during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“In this case, with President Trump’s record and with what he’s accomplished, it would be very difficult for somebody to mount a successful challenge at this point,” he added.

{mosads}Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld (R) earlier this month formed an exploratory committee for a 2020 White House bid. Additionally, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) has reportedly indicated that he is open to challenging Trump.

Hutchinson said Sunday that he thinks it would be difficult for any candidate to challenge Trump’s record, which Hutchinson described as a “tremendous success.”

“In terms of challenging an incumbent, it’s about policy and what you’ve accomplished. And what he’s done in terms of increased border security and the court, deregulating more authority to the governors … he’s had tremendous success,” Hutchinson said. 

“And so, that’s the record that he would present in the primary,” he continued. “It would be difficult for anyone to challenge that.”
