Jeffries predicts more Republicans will support impeachment inquiry

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, said Sunday that he believes more Republicans will start backing the impeachment inquiry launched into President Trump.

“I believe [more Republicans] will support us moving forward,” Jeffries said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

{mosads}Jeffries also noted that more than 300 former national security officials have come out in support of an impeachment inquiry into Trump.

“The House is a separate and co-equal branch, we don’t work for this president,” Jeffries said.

“We have a responsibility to serve as a check and balance and these issues are serious,” he added.

The House impeachment inquiry was launched amid a whistleblower complaint alleging Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, a 2020 candidate, and his son. The complaint also claims that White House officials were directed to remove the transcripts of the calls from the system in which they are typically stored.

“The president has betrayed his oath of office. The president has abused his power in a manner that undermines our national security and the integrity of our elections,” Jeffries said on Sunday.
