Sunday shows preview: Trump conviction aftershock; Could Israel agree to a cease-fire?

This week’s Sunday news shows will most likely focus on the ramifications of former President Trump’s conviction in his New York hush money trial earlier this week.

The former president became the first former U.S. president to have the status of being a convicted felon on Thursday, following a jury finding him guilty on all counts of falsifying business records to hide alleged affairs amid his 2016 campaign.

The former president railed against the trial shortly following the verdict being read.

“This was a rigged, disgraceful trial. The real verdict is going to be Nov. 5 by the people, and they know what happened here, and everybody knows what happened here,” Trump said.

Multiple prominent Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), have now criticized the verdict in the case. In a statement Thursday, Johnson, who will appear on this week’s “Fox News Sunday,” said it was “a shameful day in American history.”

“The American people rightfully see this is lawfare, and they know it is — and dangerous,” he added. “President Trump will rightfully appeal this absurd verdict — and he WILL WIN.”

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R), who will appear on CBS’ “Face the Nation” this week and is considered a possible vice presidential pick for Trump, has said that the recent conviction isn’t giving him pause on possibly serving in another Trump administration.

“It’s not causing me any pause, because I think we, everybody knows that it’s … very tough to get a fair trial for Donald Trump in New York,” Burgum said. “Does not give me pause.”

On Friday, President Biden announced terms of an Israeli-led proposal featuring a three-part road map in the direction of the conclusion of fighting and the freeing of remaining hostages taken on Oct. 7, a strong sign towards a possible ending to the Israel-Hamas war.

“After intensive diplomacy carried out by my team, my many conversations with leaders of Israel, Qatar and Egypt, and other Middle Eastern countries, Israel has offered a comprehensive new proposal. It’s a road map to an enduring cease-fire and the release of all hostages,” Biden said.

Biden said that the proposal had been transmitted to Hamas by way of Qatar, but signaled that Hamas hadn’t accepted the plan formally yet.

“This is truly a decisive moment. Israel has made their proposal. Hamas says it wants a cease-fire — this deal is an opportunity to prove whether they really mean it. Hamas needs to take the deal,” Biden said.

White House national security communications adviser John Kirby, who has often spoken with the press about the Biden administration’s policy surrounding the Israel-Hamas war, will make an appearance on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday.
