Sunday shows preview: All eyes on Trump-Vance 2024; Will Biden drop?

This week’s Sunday news shows will most likely focus on former President Trump’s pick of Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate.

Trump announced Vance as his vice presidential pick on Truth Social Monday, the first day of this year’s Republican National Committee (RNC) in Milwaukee. His choice ended a long period of speculation as to who his partner for his bid at the White House would be.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump said on Truth Social.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who will appear on ABC’s “This Week” and CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday, snapped a picture with Vance at this week’s RNC and posted it to his X account Wednesday.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who will appear on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” this week, appeared to celebrate Trump picking his fellow Midwestern Republican as his running mate Monday.

“My friend @JDVance1 will make a great Vice President,” Johnson said in a post on X.

As the RNC was taking place, pressure mounted on President Biden to step out of the presidential race. Sens. Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.) joined their colleague Sen. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) in calling on Biden to step out of the race on Friday and Thursday, respectively. 

Multiple other Democratic lawmakers in the House, including heavy hitters like Senate candidate Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), also came out in favor of Biden exiting the race this week.

Amid the chaos surrounding Biden’s candidacy, the president and his allies have been insistent that he will stay in the race. 

“Absolutely, the president’s in this race,” Biden campaign Chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said Friday, adding that the president “is more committed than ever to beat Donald Trump.”

“You have heard from the president directly, time and time again: He is in this race to win and he is our nominee, and he’s going to be our president for a second term,” she said.

Former Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.), a co-chair of the Biden-Harris campaign, is set to appear on CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday, where he will most likely face questions about the status of the president’s candidacy.
