Sunday shows preview: Lawmakers prepare for final vote on impeachment; 2020 Democrats make final push before Iowa causes

The Sunday talk show circuit will be dominated by two topics this week: The looming conclusion of the Senate impeachment trial and Monday’s Iowa caucuses.

After Senate Democrats failed to get the four GOP votes needed to allow witnesses and additional documents to be introduced into the trial Friday, Senate Republicans, along party lines, passed a resolution outlining the final stage of the trial.

Both the Democratic House managers and President Trump’s defense team will give closing arguments Monday and then the floor will open up for Senators to give their opinions. The final vote on whether to convict Trump, which is expected to fail, is scheduled for Wednesday.

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) will appear on CNN’s “State of the Union” while Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) will be on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”

Alan Dershowitz, a member of Trump’s defense team, will go on “Fox News Sunday,” with Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

The talk shows will also feature several Democratic presidential primary candidates as the Iowa caucuses kickoff the primary season on Monday.

Former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg will be on ABC’s “This Week” and “Meet the Press,” and CBS’ “Face the Nation” and “State of the Union.”

Entrepreneur and businessman Andrew Yang will join Buttigieg on “This Week,” and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) will be on “Fox News Sunday.”

Monmouth’s latest Iowa poll shows Buttigieg at 16 percent, five points behind Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and seven points behind former Vice President Joe Biden. In the poll, Klobuchar and Yang are both behind Buttigieg, polling at 10 and three percent, respectively.
