Ongoing negotiations between lawmakers and the Trump administration on the coronavirus stimulus bill are expected to dominate the Sunday Show circuit this week, as talks spill over into next week.
Trump administration officials, including Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, met with Democratic leaders on Saturday saying they made “progress” but have still not reached an agreement.
The main dispute is about the amount of money to spend: Senate Republicans have introduced a roughly $1 trillion package, while the bill passed by House Democrats in May rang in at roughly $3 trillion.
They also disagree about providing additional money for cash-strapped state and local governments who have depleted their budgets fighting the coronavirus. The final issue, and perhaps the most urgent, is how to replace beefed up unemployment benefits, which expired Friday night.
A handful of negotiators are scheduled to appear on cable talk shows this week, with both Mnuchin and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) booked on ABC’s “This Week” and White House chief of staff Mark Meadows booked on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, along with other top health officials testified before Congress on Friday where they discussed the state of vaccine production and reopening schools, among other topics.
Adm. Brett Giroir, the health official leading the Trump administration’s testing strategy, told Congress that test results continue to be delayed but improvements are coming. He is booked on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
Friday night, President Trump announced that he will ban the social media platform TikTok from operating in the United States. TikTok is owned by a larger Chinese tech company ByteDance.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who said earlier last month that the Trump administration was considering banning Chinese apps due to national security concerns, is booked on Fox News “Sunday Morning Futures.”
