Sunday shows preview: White House, congressional Democrats unable to breach stalemate over coronavirus relief

The stalemate in Washington over the next coronavirus stimulus package is likely to dominate the Sunday Show talk show circuit this weekend as the provisions set by the March CARES Act have expired. 

Earlier this month, a federal moratorium on evictions and a $600 per week federal enhancement on unemployment benefits expired as parts of the country continue to shutter and the coronavirus cases surge in various states.  

The application window for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which was created as part of the CARES Act, is closing at the end of the day Saturday, adding yet another level of pressure.

Lawmakers are most divided on how much to spend on the package, with Democrats presenting a $3 trillion proposal compared to the GOP’s $1 trillion proposal, which some Republican lawmakers argue is too much as well.

Both representatives from the White House including chief of staff Mark Meadows and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin as well as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have held several hours-long meetings throughout this week, but made little progress on their respective sticking points. 

Late Thursday, the leaders emerged from a meeting telling reporters that each side was reluctant to compromise, forcing the discussion past their self-imposed Friday deadline. 

The negotiations have led to tense jabs between lawmakers, with Pelosi telling CNBC this week that “perhaps you mistook [GOP lawmakers] for somebody who gives a damn” about the economic distress Americans are going through.

Pelosi is booked on CNN’s “State of the Union” and “Fox News Sunday.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is booked on ABC’s “This Week.”

Mnuchin is booked on “Fox News Sunday.” White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow and trade advisor Peter Navarro, two administration officials also central to negotiations, are booked on ABC’s “This Week” and NBC’s “Meet the Press,” respectively. 

President Trump has said that if his staff and Democrats are unable to strike a deal on a fifth round of legislation, he would issue executive actions meant to cut the payroll tax, among other measures.  

He is expected to give an update on the coronavirus legislation talks Saturday afternoon from his Bedminster, N.J., property.
