Sunday shows preview: Trump, top Republicans recover from COVID-19; stimulus bill remains in limbo

President Trump and Republicans’ recovery from COVID-19 and stalemates around a stimulus bill are expected to headline this week’s Sunday talk shows.

The president, who is scheduled to appear on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Features,” returned home from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Monday after spending four days there for treatment.

While in the hospital, the president received steroids, treatment with antiviral remdesivir and a double antibody cocktail from Regeneron. Leonard Schleifer, president and CEO of Regeneron, is scheduled to appear on CBS’ Face the Nation.

Upon his return home, Trump threw several curveballs in coronavirus stimulus talks, the first of which came Tuesday when he abruptly halted negotiations between Treasury Secretary Steve Mnunchin and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) until after Election Day, accusing the Democratic leader of not negotiating in “good faith.”

He later signaled that he was willing to sign a series of smaller bills aimed at airline assistance, stimulus checks and money for a small business loan program, but Pelosi had rejected this approach. Finally, on Friday, Trump offered up a $1.8 trillion coronavirus relief package

Trump has also been eager to get back on the campaign trail in the final weeks of the 2020 election, and hosted a rally at the White House on Saturday

Also in coronavirus recovery, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) was released from the hospital Saturday after staying there for a week due to his own positive diagnosis. Christie was at the White House Rose Garden event that Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top disease expert, later deemed a “superspreader event,” and assisted the president with preparations for the first presidential debate.

Meanwhile, the Senate Judiciary Committee is slated to begin a week of hearings to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Committee chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who will appear on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Features, scheduled four days of hearings beginning Oct. 12, paving the way for her confirmation by Oct. 22.

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who will appear on NBC’s “Meet the Press” has suggested that Democrats can ‘slow’ Barrett’s confirmation “perhaps a matter of hours, maybe days at most.”

Sens. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) and Chris Coons (D-Del.), also members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, are slated to appear on “Fox News Sunday.” Meanwhile, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) will appear on “Meet the Press”
