Sunday shows preview: Trump, Biden gear up for final sprint to Election Day

With nearly a week to go until Election Day, this weekend’s Sunday talk shows are expected to focus on the final efforts from the campaigns of President Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden as they attempt to sway last minute voters in key swing states. 

Recent national polling shows Biden has maintained a comfortable lead over Trump.

A new Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday placed the former vice president 10 points ahead of Trump, and this week’s national polling average from RealClearPolitics has Biden leading Trump by approximately 8 percentage points nationally. 

However, polling indicates that the race is much closer in several battleground states that could decide the election including Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. 

In the final days of the campaign, Biden is expected to focus on holding Trump accountable for the coronavirus pandemic, while also calling for a unified nation. 

“He’ll pose the question, ‘Do you want another four years of this?’” one ally close to the campaign told The Hill on Saturday. “He’ll continue to draw a contrast of how the presidency should be and what this presidency has been.”

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign plans to rally his supporters with a busy schedule in the final week before the election, with events lined up in North Carolina, Wisconsin and Ohio on Saturday alone. 

While Democrats currently hold a lead in the number of mail-in ballots sent in ahead of Election Day, the Trump campaign has indicated that they expect high voter turnout in support of Trump on Nov. 3. 

Trump himself is scheduled to appear on “America This Week” with Eric Bolling on Sunday, while Corey Lewandowski, senior adviser to the president’s reelection campaign, will be on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” 

Biden’s deputy campaign manager, Kate Bedingfield, will also be interviewed on “Meet the Press” Sunday. 

The election sprint comes amid a final push by the Trump administration to pass a COVID-19 stimulus package ahead of Election Day, with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin holding frequent talks with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to reach a deal.

However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has reportedly advised the White House against agreeing to a deal with Pelosi before Election Day on Nov. 3, arguing that it could disrupt the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett.

Pelosi is set to make an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” this weekend.
