Poll: 81 percent of Latinas say they will vote in 2016

Hispanic women will break attendance records at polling stations in November, according to a new poll released by American Women, Voto Latino Action Network and iAmerica Action.

{mosads}Of the women surveyed, 81 percent said they are “almost certain” to vote in 2016.

The numbers reflect larger polling trends from 2016. Hispanics of both genders are engaging in increased political participation and efforts to oppose presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.

In the new poll, 84 percent of Latinas viewed Trump negatively. That number aligns with a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll that found 87 percent of Hispanics nationwide have an unfavorable view of Trump.

Trump’s campaign has centered on immigration, proposing plans to deport everyone in the country illegally and to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Only 21 percent of respondents in the new poll said they favored or strongly favored the deportation of undocumented immigrants, and only 13 percent said the same about the wall. 

Immigration actions supported by Democrats were strongly favored: 91 percent of respondents said they supported a path to citizenship, and 74 percent favored the DREAM Act.

College affordability, equal pay and paid family leave were the top concerns of Latinas, according to the poll. 

Overall, Hispanic voter participation is expected to increase substantially in 2016 and to play a pivotal role in certain swing states. Arturo Vargas of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials estimates that 13.1 million Hispanics will vote in 2016, and increase from the 11.2 million in 2012 and 9.7 million in 2008.
