Incoming Hispanic Caucus head announces bid for New Mexico governor

The newly appointed head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) announced Tuesday she will run for governor of New Mexico in 2018.

Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M.) posted a video on YouTube Wednesday announcing her campaign, which she called a “new beginning.”

Lujan Grisham was elected as chairwoman of the CHC last month, a position slated to last until the end of the 115th Congress.

{mosads}In her announcement, Lujan Grisham discussed New Mexico’s high unemployment and poverty rates and criticized current Gov. Susana Martinez (R), saying she “refused to acknowledge problems even exist.”

Martinez, the country’s first Latina governor, is term-limited and can’t run again in 2018.

No Republicans have yet announced a plan to run for the office, but state Attorney General Hector Balderas has said he’s considering a run as a Democrat, The Associated Press reported.
