Dems back body cameras for ICE agents
Democrats in the House want to require immigration agents to wear body cameras amid concerns over increased immigration enforcement and the hiring of new agents.
Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) introduced a bill to that effect Friday, with 18 Democratic co-sponsors.
Clarke said the measure is necessary to protect those targeted by immigration enforcement from potential abuse.
{mosads}”As Donald Trump has dramatically expanded the number of undocumented Americans who are a priority for deportation, many immigrants in Brooklyn and across the United States now fear a knock on the door in the middle of the night or checkpoints on their drive home from work,” Clarke said in a press release.
Clarke cited “promising” early results in getting regular law enforcement officers to wear body cameras as a motivation for the proposal.
“We should apply this same approach to immigration enforcement. Immigrants and their families are entitled to respect for their humanity and to the full rights guaranteed under the law,” said Clarke.
Under President Trump’s executive actions on immigration, the number of people labeled as priorities for deportation has vastly increased, raising the possibility that more people will come into direct contact with immigration enforcement agents.
