Judge approves release of Dreamer detained for six weeks

A so-called Dreamer who has been detained for six weeks after being picked up by immigration agents was granted release by an immigration judge in Washington state on Tuesday.

Daniel Ramirez Medina will be released on bond after being picked up by Immigration and Customs and Enforcement (ICE) agents in February, according to the Associated Press.

The 24-year-old could be released from custody as soon as Wednesday, according to the report.

{mosads}Ramirez, who is a recipient of the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program — a program that allows for children who are brought to the U.S. illegally to stay in the country to work and go to school — was initially detained when ICE officers showed up at his house in Seattle to arrest his father.

Ramirez reportedly spent 40 minutes at a hearing Tuesday answering questions from prosecutors before the judge granted his release.

“He answered every question the government put to him,” his attorney, Mark Rosenbaum, told the AP. “He stayed true, and the government had no evidence whatsoever.”

President Trump has called for a crackdown on illegal immigrants but has been unclear on what he plans to do with DACA. ICE has said that Dreamers are not guaranteed protection from deportation, but they are not considered a priority.
