A group of Central American migrants traveling to the United States was blocked at an inspection facility and prevented from crossing the border from Mexico, The Associated Press reported.
Approximately 50 members made it past Mexican officials and traversed a bridge on Sunday, but were not allowed inside the U.S. inspection site and remained outside the building, the AP said.
{mosads}The development comes after the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said Sunday that the crossing was at capacity.
“As sufficient space and resources become available, CBP officers will be able to take additional individuals into the port for processing,” McAleenan said in a statement.
“CBP will communicate with Mexican authorities for operational awareness on this issue of capacity within CBP facilities as appropriate.”
President Trump has slammed the group, which has spent weeks traveling to the United States intending to seek asylum, saying that he told Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen not to allow its members into the U.S.
“Despite the Democrat inspired laws on Sanctuary Cities and the Border being so bad and one sided, I have instructed the Secretary of Homeland Security not to let these large Caravans of people into our Country. It is a disgrace,” the president tweeted last Monday. “We are the only Country in the World so naive!”
