Report: Border apprehensions plummet in June

Apprehensions at the border of immigrants entering the country illegally plunged in June, after three straight months of relatively high levels, according to The Associated Press.

The Border Patrol apprehended 34,057 people at the southwest border in June, compared to 40,344 in May, based on an unnamed official’s statement to the AP.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Border Patrol’s parent agency, has not released border apprehension numbers for June.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

President Trump has in past months been critical of Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen as border apprehensions and inadmissible rates have climbed to numbers on par with those seen during the Obama administration.

Apprehensions are generally used as a base number to estimate the number of illegal border crossing attempts.

The reported drop from May to June, if confirmed, could signify that the administration’s zero tolerance policy is having its stated deterrent effect on border crossings, or it could demonstrate seasonal migratory trends.

Illicit border crossing attempts plummeted in 2017, a phenomenon largely attributed to Trump’s election, but more or less returned to their recent historic rates in 2018.

Border crossings are largely seasonal, as spring weather facilitates transit through hostile terrain, but tend to decrease as summer heat sets in.
