New migrant caravan forming in Guatemala: report

A new caravan of migrants is forming in Central America and plans to follow the path of the one that is currently making its way through Mexico, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Journal reported that thousands of migrants from Honduras have gathered in Chiquimula, a Guatemalan city near that country’s border with Honduras.

{mosads}Charities assisting the migrants said that as many as 2,500 Honduran migrants are in the new caravan, though the newspaper noted that estimates of the size of the new caravan have varied, with some reports of only a few hundred migrants. 

The migrants in the new caravan are reportedly planning to move first toward Ciudad Tecun Uman, a Guatemalan city near the border with Mexico.

Another caravan consisting of thousands of migrants from Central America is already making its way through Mexico and toward the United States. The migrants say they are seeking asylum as they flee violence in their home countries of Guatemala and Honduras. 

The caravan has drawn the ire of President Trump, who has warned the migrants not to cross into the U.S. He has suggested that the migrants are a national security threat and has pointed to the caravan as evidence that the U.S. doesn’t have strong border laws.
