Teen migrant separated from family to be laid to rest after suicide
A 13-year-old Honduran migrant girl will be laid to rest Monday in New York after killing herself while separated from her father, CNN reports.
Heydi Gámez García tried to hang herself and was later declared brain dead. Her family told CNN García was taken off life support Thursday and died shortly after.
She had not seen her father, Manuel Gámez, in four years after he sent her to the U.S. to flee their violent hometown. {mosads}
García had been granted asylum but her father had been repeatedly rebuffed by immigration authorities, in a journey that predates the Trump administration’s policies, CNN reports.
Every failed attempt for her father to reach the U.S. pushed García further into depression, relatives told CNN.
Immigration officials released Gámez from a detention center in Houston last week “to tend to the matters of his daughter’s passing,” according to an U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) order obtained by CNN.
He was reunited with his daughter when she was already in the hospital, using a breathing tube.
“Please forgive me for failing you,” Gámez told CNN he would tell his daughter. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be there… I never meant to leave you.”
