Puerto Rico hit by 6.0 earthquake as tropical depression approaches
Puerto Rico was rattled by a 6.0-magnitude earthquake late Monday that occurred amid preparations for the possible impacts from a tropical depression.
According to The Associated Press, which cited the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was followed by aftershocks with magnitudes of 4.7 and 4.6.
A spokeswoman for Puerto Rico’s emergency management agency, Kiara Hernández, told the AP that damage was not immediately reported and the island was not at risk of a tsunami.{mosads}
She added that officials were already on a heightened state of alert due to the approaching Tropical Depression Karen.
The AP reported that Monday night’s earthquake, which was felt across Puerto Rico, was the strongest quake to hit the island in the past few years.
According to the wire service, a 6.4-magnitude quake was recorded in 2014 and the strongest quake to hit Puerto Rico in recent history was a 7.3 tremor in 1918.
