Women’s group report: Fox News website best for gender parity

A women’s group led by feminist icon Gloria Steinem and actress and activist Jane Fonda is praising Fox News’s website for leading the media industry in gender parity.

The Women’s Media Center’s annual “Divided 2017” report said Fox’s website “achieves the best gender ratio” of the major news websites they analyzed, with 50.1 percent of bylines being men and 49.9 percent women.

The Huffington Post was a close second in the category, with men getting 50.8 percent of bylines.

Overall, 53.9 percent of bylines at the websites analyzed were men.

Overall, men report 74.8 percent of broadcast news.

“PBS NewsHour” led the way in broadcast news gender parity, with 45 percent of coverage being “the work of female anchors and correspondents.”

“ABC World News Tonight” finished last in the category, with women represented at just 11.8 percent.

The major cable news networks of Fox News, CNN and MSNBC were not included in the broadcast analysis of the study.

Men represented 61.9 percent of bylines in the 10 major newspapers studied. The San Jose Mercury News fared best in the category, with 44.3 percent of bylines being women, while the New York Daily News came in last, with just 24 percent of bylines being women.

“It’s deeply disheartening to see the regression in evening broadcast news at the three major networks,” Women’s Media Center President Julie Burton said in a statement.

“Who tells the story is as important as what the story is. Our research continues to show that, overwhelmingly, it is men who are telling the story.”

The Women’s Research Center was founded in 2005 by Steinem, Fonda and feminist writer and poet Robin Morgan.
