Mary Trump — the niece of former President Donald Trump — announced Tuesday night that she will be joining a growing list of artists who are pulling their content from Spotify in protest of what they say is a spread of COVID-19 disinformation on the steaming platform.
“I’m removing my podcast from @Spotify. I know it’s not a big deal but hope it will be part of a growing avalanche,” the author and psychologist wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to #NeilYoung, @jonimitchell, and @nilslofgren for your courage in leading the way.”
Mary Trump’s podcast, “The Mary Trump Show,” is hosted on several streaming services, such as Apple Podcasts and Amazon’s Audible. She discusses politics and pop culture on the show and occasionally interviews guests.
The most recent episode, titled “#DeleteSpotify,” was posted Wednesday.
Graham Nash and India Arie joined Neil Young and Joni Mitchell on Tuesday in announcing that they would be removing their music from Spotify over content related to COVID-19 on Joe Rogan’s popular podcast.
The tech giant announced Sunday that it would be adding content advisories about COVID-19 misinformation to any podcast that discusses the virus. But critics slammed the move, with some claiming that the company is using the “Facebook playbook” of distancing itself from the responsibility to moderate content it distributes.
Rogan said on Sunday he is “not trying to promote misinformation” or “trying to be controversial” and that his intention was to “talk to people and have interesting conversations.”
Mary Trump has been highly critical of her uncle and her other family members, publishing a book in 2020 titled “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man.”
