Rep.-elect Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.-14)
Date of birth: May 27, 1974
Residence: Milledgeville, Ga.
Occupation: commercial construction company owner
Education: B.A., University of Georgia
Family: husband, Perry; three children
Marjorie Taylor Greene may be the most controversial figure joining Congress this cycle.
Greene won the Republican race to replace the retiring Rep. Tom Graves (R-Ga.) in a run-off to represent Georgia’s 14th District in Congress. Her Democratic opponent in the general election abruptly dropped out of the race in September.
The 46-year-old has previously expressed support for QAnon, a sprawling meta-conspiracy theory which claims baselessly that President Trump is working to expose a powerful cabal of Democrats and Hollywood elites trafficking children.
She has walked back her support of the theory, but the damage in terms of legitimizing it may already be done.
The House approved a resolution condemning QAnon earlier this year, pointing out its several connections to dangerous criminal activity. Seventeen Republicans voted against the resolution.
Greene’s controversial comments extend beyond just supporting QAnon. She has backed conspiracy theories about 9/11, claimed former President Obama is Muslim, said the deadly white supremacist 2017 rally in Charlottesville, Va., was an “inside job” and ran ads suggesting a threat of violence against sitting members of Congress.
