Rep.-elect Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.) will serve as the representative for New York’s 2nd Congressional District after defeating Democratic candidate Jackie Gordon.

Garbarino will replace longtime Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.) as he retired after nearly three decades representing Long Island. King endorsed the Republican candidate to take his House seat.

The 36-year-old Republican has served for four terms in the New York Assembly since 2013, advocating against higher taxes and for law enforcement. His current term ends Dec. 31.

He describes himself as a “third generation local businessman” as he works for his family law firm in Sayville, N.Y.

Garbarino said he will focus on restoring the state and local tax deduction for homeowners after President Trump’s tax bill placed a $10,000 cap on deducting state and local taxes from federal income taxes.

The future representative also said he prioritizes public safety and standing by police and has been endorsed by several law enforcement unions.

“The uniqueness of Long Island has never been lost on me, and I have made it my mission to preserve the island lifestyle we are so fortunate to enjoy,” he said on his campaign website.
