Elon Musk will not join Twitter’s board of directors as planned, according to the company’s CEO.

Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal announced on Sunday that Musk decided not to join the board.

“The Board and I had many discussions about Elon joining the board, and with Elon directly,” Agrawal said in a memo sent to employees that he posted to Twitter, confirming that Musk was offered a seat contingent on a background check and formal acceptance.

“Elon’s appointment to the board was set to become effective 4/9, but Elon shared that same morning that he will no longer be joining the board. I believe this is for the best,” he added without providing further reasoning for the decision.

Agrawal also noted that the Tesla CEO is Twitter’s “biggest shareholder and we will remain open to his input.”

Twitter had announced on Tuesday that Musk would join the board.

Earlier on Sunday, Musk tweeted his suggested changes for Twitter Blue, the social media giant’s paid service.

“Everyone who signs up for Twitter Blue (ie pays $3/month) should get an authentication checkmark,” Musk tweeted, adding that the authentication for the paid service should be distinctive from the checkmarks used to verify public figures and official accounts.

“And no ads,” Musk added as part of his weekend thread. “The power of corporations to dictate policy is greatly enhanced if Twitter depends on advertising money to survive.”

Last week, Twitter announced that it was testing a possible edit feature. Ahead of that announcement, Musk polled his followers on the site to ask, “Do you want an edit button?”
